Awards for contribution to community through innovation

Ahmedabad: The 4th GTU Innovation Sankuls Day was celebrated by Gujarat Technological University(GTU) Innovation Council(GIC) among jubilant atmosphere of students, their parents and faculties who got the awards. Total 174 awards were presented to students, faculties and industrialists for their efforts towards contribution to community through various innovations. GTU Innovation Council (GIC) is the 1st large scale innovation ecosystem,which has worked successfully to bring the culture of innovation all across the universityand its associated ecosystem during the past four years. Auditorium of ParyavaranMandir, Ahmedabad was jam packed to appreciate outstanding work at an individual, team or institutional level. GTU Innovation Council gave away 3 kinds of Innovation award during this occasion. Innovation to impact ( i2i) award was given to the student innovators whose innovation has potential of making huge impact in social life. 30 faculty members from 25 GTU Innovation Sankulwere given away this year Pedagogical Innovation Award by ShriNavalawala. 8 teams of students were awarded in I2I (innovation to impact award) , 13 teams of students  were given  I-SCALE award to appreciate their Student Start-ups based on co-creation. On behalf of the Council of deans and associate deans, Chief guest BabubhaiNavlawala, Advisor to Chief Ministergave an award of excellence for extraordinary leadership to Honourable VC, GTU Dr.AkshaiAggarwal for bring 1st of its kind Student Start-up Policy in a large scale University system.The Chief Guest also gave  an extraordinary  gold medal to Mr.HiranmayMahanta, MD Techpedia on behalf of GTU for his contribution to the efforts to make students innovative and coordinating the innovation movement  in  the state of Gujarat since the inception of GTU Innovation Council. Shri Navlawala,expressed his feelings by these words: It is very unfortunate that there are no structural changes visible in our education system since independence. But after watching the awards ceremony, my heart is now full of hope and confidence. GTU is doing commendable work in direction of various innovations, sensitivity towards community & industry and responsibility. I can see long lasting change. There is need of propagating work of GTU outside Gujarat State about what is happening in GTU. Students here are having focussed mind-set and clear objectives. Eminent jurist ShriNaniPalkhiwala once said that Indian as an individual is excellent, but collectively, they are a disaster. But after watching work of students-faculty groups at GTU, my feelings about ShriPalkhiwala’s quote has been totally changed. DSC_0217 Dr.AkshaiAggarwal,Vice Chancellor of Gujarat Technological University(GTU) said that GTU Innovation Sankuls have played a major role for colleges being in touch with the industries. Aim of the awards is to strengthen linkage between college and industry, linkage between college to college and linkage between students and research. The awards are for students & their groups who have done something to help the society. He expressed concern that engineering and technical education in India is not at par with developed countries. We have a long way to cover. Policy and protocols do not make university great, but classrooms and workshops can play important role in it. It is pursuit of excellence, which can make GTU proud of nation.  GTU Innovation Council has set up 25 GTU Innovation Sankuls/Clusters, which are regional communities of GTU educational institutions and the industries in the region. Swami Sarvasthanandji of Rajkot was the chief guest of the event. He said that a German University is impressed by the innovation work done at GTU. Don’t create people who seek jobs, but create people who will become job creators. He advised students to make all round efforts for innovation. You can achieve anything. Through innovations, students can be helpful to society and to poor. Mr.HirnmayMahanta, Head of GIC informed the gathering about aim of the awards. He said that Pedagogical Innovation Awards (PIA) are being given to recognize unique efforts in setting up innovation culture, ecosystem, administration, innovation process, innovation dissemination, innovative measures in IPR and associated efforts, industry-academic cooperation, entrepreneurship and other similar efforts.GTU Innovation Council has declared GIC i2i (Innovate to Impact) Award 2015 to recognise innovative projects of students across GTU affiliated colleges in Engineering, Polytechnic, Pharmacy, MCA, MBA and others. He said that speed, scale and sustainability are the need of the hour for innovation. All students want to be guided, not dictated. Every student is genius, but they lack a platform. Leadership, system and approach are required to improve technical education. Bold steps are needed. GTU is taking such bold steps under able guidance of Dr.AkshaiAggarwal,Vice Chancellor. One key aim of this mission is to develop inter-relationship for national and international collaborations for innovation in the fields of Science, Engineering, Technology and Management. The Innovation Council has started strategic steps to establish a close and continuing inter-action between the industries & businesses and the students & faculties in all the undergraduate and postgraduate courses like Engineering, Management, pharmacy, MCA and Polytechnics and the faculty members in GTU.Student’s Projects which address an important social, technological problem faced by masses or disadvantaged people/sectors/spaces or micro and small enterprises or have the potential to impact a pressing national need.
