Die Horribilis for Communities in Australia

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]The ABC news website (25 Aug 2015) reported that a major policing operation planned for Melbourne's CBD over the weekend has been cancelled after a backlash over plans to include Australian Border Force (ABF) officials in the crackdown and the key points were that Operation Fortitude cancelled after public backlash, Border Force had planned to check visas in Melbourne's CBD, Vic Government criticises Border Force and MP compares Tony Abbott to Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin The original announcement quoted ABF regional commander for Victoria and Tasmania Don Smith as saying officers would be positioned at various locations around the city and would speak "with any individual we cross paths with". The ABF then issued another statement saying: "To be clear, the ABF does not and will not stop people at random in the streets ... the ABF does not target of the basis of race, religion, or ethnicity". The satirical response by SBS Backburner on August 2015 should not be taken lightly because it projects the possible action taking by the Australian Border Force (ABF). See http://www.sbs.com.au/comedy/article/2015/08/28/border-force-targeting-people-suspected-being-brown Our first reaction to these statements was fear and what is my country doing to us and why? One of the major reasons why immigrants choose Australia was because it is a free, democratic and civilized society where there is no oppression, intimidation and fear from our police force or any uniformed branch. It brings back memories of past of having to carry an ID card in person at all times and to be stopped and questioned by Police or arrest on unreasonable suspicions. This news also conjured up images in our mind of “Kristallnacht” that took place in Nazi Germany on 9-10 November 1938. Our second reaction was “Is Australia parachuted into the GOP Presidential nominations where Donald Trump (of deport the millions of illegal fame) or Jeb Bush (anti-Asian sentiments) reigned supreme, and Australia has adopted these racists leanings ahead of the Conservatives in the US and to be petted on the head as an obedient “Deputy Marshall”? What a Die Horribilis for all the CALD communities in Australia! Fortunately, the planned “Operation Fortitude” was cancelled and the nation should be grateful to the people of Melbourne for vibrantly opposing it, the Victorian Police for cancelling it and the State Victorian Government for chiding the ABF. Thank God for other Politicians speaking out against this scary fiasco. Some of us in the community have often defended that Australia is not a racist country in their radio interviews with local radio stations and BBC London; and the “Operation Fortitude”, whether it was implemented or not, has made their past defence seems null and void.   As the media reports suggested that the Australian government has a hand in it, the taint of a racist country will take time to clean. Who is responsible for this fiasco, the Prime Minister, the Minister of Immigration, or the Head of the Australian Border Patrol? The Australian government should come clean on this issue as to restore the confidence of the people that we still live in a free society, free from intimidation, and oppression based on race. Instead of government initiating policy, we are proposing a citizen’s policy for the consideration by the Australian government that the ABF should only patrol on and outside our borders and never meddle with domestic policing which should be the jurisdiction of the State Police. Secondly, any such forces should be under the control of Foreign Affairs. Finally, we urge all concerned individuals, community organisations and their leaders, to rise to the occasion and send a strong message to Canberra that we strongly oppose such measures taken by ABF as a fundamental infringement of our civil liberties and to restore calm and confidence in the community, and that Australia is a cohesive, harmonious and multicultural society where there is no room for any racists policies. Remember “The world is a dangerous place to live; not because of the people who are evil, but because of the people who don't do anything about it. - Albert Einstein Dr Anthony Pun, OAM                 Mr Ajmer Singh Gill          Mr Bawa Jadgev, OAM Chair, MCC NSW                      President                   Hon Secretary National President, CCCA         National Sikh Council of Australia & Sikh Mission Centre Sydney[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
