Four-fold registration by NRIs in Pravasi Bhartiya Divas

New Delhi : Gujarat Chief Minister Smt. Anandiben Patel today said that Pravasi Bharatiya Diwas to be held at Mahatma Mandir in Gandhinagar between 7th -9th January, 2015 will leave a lasting memory for PIOs and NRIs. In comparison to previous years, more than four times registrations have already been made by NRIs and the number is expected to rise. While addressing the media persons in New Delhi, she apprised that world level exhibition will be opened on the very first day of the event in which cultural diversity of India will be displayed on a large scale. The exhibitions of different departments of Government of India as well as State Governments will also focus on specific schemes and initiatives. The cultural programmes have also been arranged during the three- day event. Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD) is celebrated on 9th January every year to mark the contribution of Overseas Indian community in the development of India. January 9 was chosen as the day to celebrate this occasion since it was on this day in 1915 that Mahatma Gandhi, the greatest Pravasi, returned to India from South Africa, later leading India’s freedom struggle and changed the lives of Indians forever. This year's PBD will be more significant as it is 100th year of Gandhiji's return to India. To pay homage to Mahatma Gandhiji, Gujarat Government has established a permanent exhibition, "Salt Mound" on Gandhi's life journey at Mahatma Mandir. Perhaps, for the first time, modern technology has been used for showcasing life history of any individual. Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi will inaugurate this historical event,  she added. On the second day of event, cultural programmes will be organized by the Gujarat  Government where cultural diversity of India will be showcased for the visiting guests. Besides this, a play on life of Mahatma Gandhi and his role in independence movement will be screened  at Sabarmati Riverfront on January 9. An International Kite Festival has  been organized on 10th January at Sabarmati Riverfront for  national & international kite-flyers. Gujarat Chief Minister also apprised that 7th Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit will be organized on 11th-13th January 2015, after the Pravasi Bhartiya Diwas. She invited media persons to attend both mega events.
