Skill Development – The foundation to transform India into a developed nation
The seminar was inaugurated by Shri Vijaybhai Rupani, Hon’ble Chief Minister, Gujarat. Shri Dilipkumar Thakore, Hon’ble Minister for Labour & Employment, Government of Gujarat; Shri Punambhai Makwana, Hon’ble Parliamentary Secretary, Labour and Employment Department, Gujarat; Ms. Marina Walter, Deputy Country Director, UNDP India; Prof. Anil Sahasrabudhe, Chairman, AICTE; Dr. Rajiv Kumar Gupta, IAS, Principal Secretary, Labour & Employment Department, Government of Gujarat and Shri D K Parekh, IAS, Director, Employment and Training and MD, GSDM were also present at the auspicious occasion. Dr. Rajiv Kumar Gupta welcomed all the dignitaries and participants. He reiterated the Hon’ble Prime Minister’s vision that there would be shift from IITs to ITIs in the coming years in the field of skill development.
Ms. Marina Walter urged the need for youth to have multi-faceted skills to cater to the current demand driven skilling. She stressed the need for mainstreaming vocational education and to introduce curriculum covering skill training right from secondary education. She mentioned briefly about the DISHA initiative started by UNDP and its mission to skill 1 million women within a span of 3 years in India. She also highlighted various statistics from the recent India Skills Report. She ended by urging the need to have soft skills amongst the youth along with the domain skills.
Prof. Anil Sahasrabudhe mentioned that Skill India Mission is at the centre of all the missions launched by the Hon’ble Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi. He insisted on the need to impart training on wide range of skills to the youth. He mentioned various initiatives taken by MHRD such as an Online Portal – “Swayam”, start-up policy by AICTE, Hackathon, etc. He was hopeful that India would provide skilled manpower to cater to the needs of skill requirement across the globe. He stressed to take up the challenge of demographic dividend of India.
Shri Dilipkumar Thakore, Hon’ble Minister for Labour & Employment highlighted that Gujarat had established an ITI in each taluka. He also briefed about the various initiatives taken by the Labour & Employment Department such as Craftsmen Training Scheme (CTS) and exemption from tuition fees for weaker sections of the society as well as women in ITIs. He also mentioned about the initiatives like i-KVKs, Skill Certification, Superior Technology course that have benefitted the youth and the industries.
Sharing a brief about the upcoming Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit 2017, Shri Vijaybhai Rupani highlighted India’s image has improved considerably due to the various initiatives taken by the Hon’ble Prime Minister, Shri Narendrabhai Modiji. He pressed upon the need to have universities in various disciples to enable the skill ecosystem. He proudly mentioned the presence of universities in different disciples present in Gujarat. He also proudly shared that since last 13 years, Gujarat stood first in providing employment to the candidates through Employment Exchanges and Gujarat had achieved top position in the country in the placement of SC, ST and women candidates. He ended by quoting the slogan ‘Shramev Jayate’ for India to march ahead in the areas of skill development and entrepreneurship.
Following the inaugural session, the seminar had sessions on topics such as “Building Right Skills for Sustainable Employment”, “Connecting Skills with Occupation: Challenges and Opportunities” and “Skills for Green Jobs: The Emerging Trades” involving a participation from International as well as National speakers. The seminar successfully concluded with the vote of thanks by Shri D K Parekh, IAS, Director Employment & Training and MD, GSDM. The event witnessed wide participation of around 1000 delegates including leading industry players, skill and training providers, academicians, learners and experts in the field of skill development and entrepreneurship.
