- The Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, has condoled the loss of lives due to train accident in Amritsar. “Extremely saddened by the train accident in Amritsar. The tragedy is heart-wrenching. My deepest condolences to the families of those who lost their loved ones and I pray that the injured recover quickly. Have asked officials to provide immediate assistance that is required”, the Prime Minister tweeted.
- Capt. Amarinder Singh, Chief Minister of the state said, Have set up Crisis Management Group under Brahm Mohindra to monitor relief & rehabilitation efforts in Amritsar. Won’t spare any efforts on part of govt to tackle the crisis. We will do everything possible to assist the injured. Have directed the district administration to leave no stone unturned to ensure the best possible treatment for them. The treatment given in hospitals is also being supervised under the high ranking officers. Govt. machinery in Amritsar has been urgently ordered by C.M. to move for rescuing operations & relief work. My govt will give Rs 5 lakh to kin of each deceased & free treatment to injured in govt & pvt hospitals. District authorities have been mobilised on war footing. The state will remain in mourning tomorrow in view of #Amritsar train mishap. All offices & educational institutions will remain closed.
- At least 60 people celebrating Dussehra were killed after a train ran over hundreds standing on a railway track in Amritsar on Friday evening. As Ravan's effigy - located very close to the tracks at Jaura Phatak - was lit and fireworks went off, a section of the crowd retreated towards the tracks, where a large number of people were already standing to watch the celebrations. The people who were hit could not see or hear the train due to the exploding crackers. An angry crowd shouted slogans against local legislator Navjot Kaur Sidhu, who was present as chief guest during the event.
